A nomad's apothecary, La Abeja Herbs is a dream realized, for herbalist and folk healer, Sophia Rose. Sophia is softness and strength. She is fierce and loving honesty, quiet curiosity. She is a woman who listens closely to the singing of the Earth’s Spirit and shares the beauty of all that she hears in her work with plants and people. Through La Abeja, Sophia offers New and Full Moon ceremonies, crafts a host of wild medicines and apothecary goods, holds space for flower essence and herbal wellness consultations, and teaches classes on topics including women's medicine, folk herbalism, and wild foods.
In 2009, Sophia Rose left her home in the Lone Star State and headed to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado where she studied with Paul Bergner at the North American Institute of Medical Herbalism. It was at the school's extensive apothecary that she first found herself, happily at home, in the role of resident medicine maker and Wildcrafter. Sophia Rose also had the good fortune to apprentice with Laura Clemmons of Strega Gardens. After completing her thesis on the magical and medicinal uses of Solomon's Plume (Maianthemum racemosum) in 2012, she received her certificate as a Master Herbalist and embarked upon the journey that has become La Abeja Herbs.
For many years, La Abeja Herbs made its home in the high desert of New Mexico, among the Sagebrush and Juniper and unending skies. It was here that the business began to blossom into the luscious flower it has become over the years. But little in life is unchanging, and following this transformative chapter of mesas and mountaintops, Sophia Rose moved the brick and mortar Apothecary to her hometown of Austin TX while she herself returned to her nomadic roots and took to the road. Sophia spent most of 2016 traveling solo up the West Coast, wildcrafting, teaching, and communing with the wild plants, people, and places. Upon the completion of this journey both the Apothecary and its keeper have planted roots back in Austin among the Yaupon and Prickly Pear, and the place where it all began...
